Riff

Riff is an American R&B quintet from Paterson, New Jersey, that rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The group gained significant cultural visibility through their appearance in the 1989 film 'Lean on Me', where they performed a cappella in a bathroom scene, establishing their identity as technically proficient vocalists.

Their sound is a bridge between the classic doo-wop influenced soul of the 1960s and the modern, production-heavy R&B of the 1990s. Musically, they are characterized by dense vocal layering and the use of New Jack Swing production elements, such as gated reverb on drums and syncopated synth basslines. Despite the crowded field of 90s vocal groups, Riff distinguished themselves through their cinematic associations and their ability to maintain a 'street' authenticity while delivering highly polished pop-soul. Several members later migrated to the group Men of Vizion, further cementing their place in the lineage of East Coast vocal harmony groups. They remain a key reference point for the 'Songbird' aesthetic of the early 90s urban contemporary scene.
