It is anchored by the late Tony Allen's legendary drumming, which provides a shifting, skeletal foundation that feels both ancient and futuristic. Flea's bass provides a rubbery, melodic counterpoint that avoids his usual rock aggression in favor of a deep, pocket-focused groove. Damon Albarn's contribution is largely atmospheric, filling the gaps with ghostly synths and understated guitar work.
What makes this project distinctive is the restraint. Despite the high-profile names involved, the music never feels like a vanity project or a crowded jam session. It is remarkably spacious, allowing guest vocalists like Erykah Badu and Fatoumata Diawara to float over the rhythms rather than compete with them.
