Round Table is a cornerstone of the post-Shibuya-kei movement, formed in 1993 by Katsutoshi Kitagawa and Rieko Ito. Emerging from a college jazz society, the duo's sound is rooted in a deep appreciation for sophisticated harmony, AOR, and 1960s French pop.
While their early indie work established them as critics' favorites for their 'Akishibu' (Akihabara-Shibuya) crossover appeal, their career reached a new trajectory in 2002 through their collaboration with vocalist Nino. This partnership, known as ROUND TABLE featuring Nino, became synonymous with high-quality anime soundtracks, most notably for the series Chobits and Aria. Kitagawa has since become a prolific producer and composer for other J-pop acts, cementing his influence on the industry's harmonic language. The band is celebrated for maintaining a high-fidelity, analog-leaning production style that prioritizes 'groove' and melodic clarity, bridging the gap between underground indie-pop and mainstream commercial success.
