Scary Kids Scaring Kids

Formed in Gilbert, Arizona in 2002, Scary Kids Scaring Kids (SKSK) became a pivotal force in the second wave of post-hardcore. Their sound identity is characterized by the prominent use of synthesizers within a heavy rock framework, a stylistic choice that distinguished them from peers like Chiodos and Saosin.

The band's early work, particularly the 'After Dark' EP and their debut LP 'The City Sleeps in Flames,' established a template of high-tempo melodic aggression paired with introspective, often somber lyrical themes. The late Tyson Stevens provided a focal point with a vocal style that transitioned seamlessly between vulnerable melodicism and visceral screams. Following a self-titled sophomore effort that leaned further into experimental and atmospheric rock, the band dissolved in 2010. The tragic passing of Stevens in 2014 cemented the band's cult status. Their 2019 reunion and subsequent 2022 album 'Out of Light' saw the band evolve into a collaborative entity, utilizing guest vocalists to expand their sonic palette while maintaining their signature synth-heavy intensity. They remain a touchstone for the 'emo' era's intersection with technical post-hardcore.
