Gritty, bass-heavy 70s rock with a sharp pre-punk edge. Tight grooves and stinging guitar work for late nights in neon-lit cities.
Formed in 1972, Sharks were a British rock supergroup of sorts, founded by bassist Andy Fraser following his departure from Free. The lineup featured the highly respected session guitarist Chris Spedding, vocalist Snips (Steve Parsons), and drummer Marty Simon.
Signed to Island Records, the band occupied a unique space in the early 70s landscape, blending the soul-inflected hard rock of Fraser's previous work with a leaner, more cynical edge that anticipated the punk movement. Despite significant critical acclaim and the pedigree of its members, the band suffered from commercial instability and internal friction, leading to Fraser's early exit. Their influence, however, was profound; the track 'Sophistication' is famously cited as a structural blueprint for The Clash's 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?' Their sound is characterized by Spedding's 'less is more' guitar philosophy and a rhythmic complexity that eschewed the bloat of progressive rock. They remain a cult favorite among collectors of 70s UK rock and are frequently cited as a pivotal influence on the first wave of British punk and pub rock.
