Sinister

Sinister is a foundational pillar of the Dutch death metal scene, formed in 1988 in Schiedam. Alongside peers like Asphyx and Pestilence, they helped define a European sound that was distinct from the Florida and Stockholm schools, characterized by a darker, more occult atmosphere and a relentless rhythmic drive.

Their early 1990s output, particularly 'Cross the Styx' and 'Diabolical Summoning,' is considered essential listening in the genre, showcasing a blend of high-speed brutality and eerie, minor-key riffing. A significant turning point occurred in 2005 when the band reformed with original drummer Aad Kloosterwaard moving to the microphone, a rare transition that successfully maintained the band's identity across a prolific second era. Critically, they are respected for their consistency and refusal to soften their sound, maintaining a 'true' death metal aesthetic for over three decades. Their influence is felt most strongly in the brutal and technical death metal subgenres, where their emphasis on blast-beat endurance and dense guitar textures remains a benchmark.
