Slipmatt

Matthew Nelson, professionally known as Slipmatt, is a cornerstone figure in the evolution of British electronic dance music. Emerging in the late 1980s, he transitioned from the acid house scene into the burgeoning breakbeat hardcore movement, most notably as one half of SL2.

His production on 'On a Ragga Tip' served as a pivotal moment in music history, bringing the underground rave aesthetic to the UK Top 10 and helping to codify the fusion of reggae, hip-hop breaks, and techno. Throughout the 1990s, he became the 'Godfather of Hardcore,' specifically through his SMD (Slip Matt's Dubs) series which laid the groundwork for Happy Hardcore by emphasizing melodic uplift and increased BPMs. His career arc is a masterclass in genre-building, moving from the raw warehouse sounds of Raindance to the polished anthems of Helter Skelter. Critically, he is respected for his technical precision as a DJ and his ability to maintain cultural relevance across several decades of dance music evolution, eventually influencing the 'Ravebreaks' and modern jungle revivalist movements.
