Soulsavers

Dusty trip-hop beats meeting weathered baritone vocals and gospel swells. Cinematic, spiritual, and deeply nocturnal music for the small hours of the night.

Intro

Soulsavers create a sound that feels like a spiritual reckoning happening in a smoke-filled basement. It is a dense, atmospheric blend of electronic precision and raw, human imperfection. The music is anchored by heavy, downtempo rhythms that draw from the trip-hop tradition, but the soul of the project lies in its organic textures: the warm hum of a Hammond organ, the grit of a bluesy guitar, and the soaring, mournful power of a gospel choir.

What truly distinguishes the project is its role as a vessel for some of the most iconic, weathered voices in alternative music. By pairing the gravelly, world-weary baritones of Mark Lanegan or Dave Gahan with their cinematic production, Soulsavers transform standard song structures into something resembling modern hymns. There is a persistent sense of 'desert noir' here, a feeling of vast, lonely spaces and the search for redemption within them.

Newcomers should start with 'Broken' or 'It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s the Way You Land'. These albums represent the peak of their collaboration with Mark Lanegan, perfectly capturing the intersection of electronic gloom and rootsy, spiritual gravitas. It is the ideal soundtrack for moments of deep reflection or the quiet, heavy hours of a late night.

Soulsavers (also known as The Soulsavers Soundsystem) is an English-American production and remix team composed of Rich Machin and Ian Glover. The Soulsavers' downtempo electronica sound incorporates influences of rock, gospel, soul, and country. To date, the duo has released six albums: Tough Guys Don't Dance in 2003, It's Not How Far You Fall, It's the Way You Land in 2007 (with Mark Lanegan and others), Broken in 2009 (again with Lanegan and guest vocalists), The Light the Dead See in 2012, Angels & Ghosts in 2015 and Imposter in 2021 (with Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode).
