Spite

Spite is a Brooklyn-based one-man black metal entity helmed by the musician Salpsan. Since its inception in 2010, the project has carved out a niche by eschewing the 'Norsecore' tropes of the 1990s in favor of the primitive, 'first wave' black metal aesthetics of the 1980s.

The sound identity is defined by a heavy reliance on mid-tempo, thrash-influenced riffing, a raw analog production style, and a lyrical focus on Hebrew and Judeo-Christian mysticism. Unlike many of its contemporaries, Spite uses these religious frameworks to subvert and blaspheme from a position of deep theological knowledge rather than surface-level shock value. The project is often associated with the 'New York Black Metal' (NYBM) scene, sharing a certain sonic grime and avant-garde sensibility with acts like Negative Plane. Critical consensus highlights the project's ability to maintain a sense of 'cult' mystery while delivering sophisticated songwriting that honors the genre's origins. With the release of 'The Third Temple' in 2024, Spite continues to be a standard-bearer for traditionalist black metal that remains conceptually rigorous and sonically uncompromising.
