Thou Art Lord

Thou Art Lord is a seminal project in the Hellenic black metal scene, formed in 1993 as a collaborative outlet for Sakis Tolis (Rotting Christ) and The Magus (Necromantia). The band serves as a bridge between the melodic black metal of the former and the ritualistic, occult-heavy style of the latter.

Unlike the 'Second Wave' of Norwegian black metal, Thou Art Lord emphasizes mid-tempo grooves, warm analog production, and a heavy influence from 80s thrash and death metal. Their sound is characterized by thick guitar layers, prominent bass work (often utilizing the 8-string bass techniques of The Magus), and a focus on atmosphere over speed. Throughout their career, they have cycled through various vocalists, including Gothmog and Spiros Antoniou (Septicflesh), further cementing their status as a nexus for the Greek extreme metal community. Critically, they are regarded as architects of the 'Greek Sound,' which prioritizes Mediterranean melody and occult mysticism over the nihilistic frost of their northern peers. Their discography reflects a commitment to 'no holds barred' extreme music, resisting the trends of technical perfection in favor of raw, emotive power.
