St Germain, the primary alias of French producer Ludovic Navarre, is the definitive architect of the nu jazz and jazz-house movement that peaked in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Emerging from the French electronic scene alongside peers like Daft Punk and Air, Navarre took a vastly different path by prioritizing the organic textures of jazz, blues, and later, West African traditional music.

His breakout work, 'Boulevard', established a blueprint for 'French Touch' that was more sophisticated and lounge-oriented than the disco-heavy sounds of his contemporaries. His masterpiece, 'Tourist' (2000), released on the legendary Blue Note label, became a global phenomenon, proving that jazz improvisation could coexist with 4/4 house structures without losing its integrity. Critically, he is respected for his restraint; he allows live musicians to solo freely over his programmed foundations, creating a hybrid sound that appeals equally to crate-digging jazz purists and club-going electronic fans.
