Starflyer 59 is the primary vehicle for songwriter Jason Martin, a prolific figure in the American indie underground since 1993. Emerging from Riverside, California, the band initially gained notoriety as a key American proponent of shoegaze, characterized by the 'Silver' and 'Gold' albums which featured massive, down-tuned guitar layers and Martin's characteristic deadpan vocals. Signed to Tooth & Nail Records, they became one of the label's most enduring and respected acts, bridging the gap between the Christian underground and the broader indie rock scene.

The band's career is marked by significant stylistic pivots. Under the influence of producer Gene Eugene, albums like 'The Fashion Focus' (1998) introduced keyboards and a softer, chamber-pop sensibility. This evolution continued with 'Leave Here a Stranger' (2001), produced by Terry Scott Taylor and famously recorded in mono as an homage to Pet Sounds. Martin's work is celebrated for its consistency and its ability to incorporate diverse influences - from blues rock on 'Americana' to synth-pop and new wave on later releases - while maintaining a singular, melancholic identity.
