Formed in 1993 by Pete Webb and Giles Butcher, the collective expanded the genre's vocabulary by integrating high-level turntable artistry via DJ Louie G and a rotating cast of vocalists, most notably Helen White (who also worked with Alpha).
Their sound is characterized by a sophisticated blend of jazz, dub, and abstract hip-hop, heavily reliant on the Akai sampler aesthetic of the era. Their debut album 'Tempesta' (1996) received significant critical acclaim, particularly in the US via CMJ, and their inclusion on Kruder & Dorfmeister's seminal 'DJ-Kicks' mix solidified their status within the global downtempo elite. After a period of hibernation to build their own studio and label, Remote Records, they released 'My Ooh-Zik' in 2001, which showcased a more refined, self-contained production style. They remain a quintessential example of the 'Bristol Sound' - moody, bass-heavy, and deeply atmospheric.
