Stingray

Stingray was a premier South African hard rock outfit formed in Johannesburg in 1979. During their brief but impactful tenure (1978-1981), they became one of the country's most successful rock exports, bridging the gap between local pub rock and international AOR standards.

Their sound identity is rooted in the transition from 70s progressive rock to the more streamlined hard rock of the early 80s. The band featured a high level of musicianship, notably guitarist Mike Pilot and vocalist Dennis East, whose collaboration defined their melodic yet aggressive profile. Their 1979 self-titled debut and the hit single 'Better the Devil You Know' solidified their place in the South African rock canon, reaching number 4 on the national charts. Critically, they are viewed as a 'supergroup' of the local scene, featuring members who had already established themselves in other prominent acts.
