Target was an American hard rock quintet based in Memphis, Tennessee, active during the mid-1970s. The band is most historically significant as the launching pad for vocalist Jimi Jamison, who would later achieve massive commercial success with Survivor and Cobra.
Musically, Target occupied the space between the heavy blues-rock of the early 70s and the emerging Arena Rock/AOR sound. They released two albums on A&M Records, 'Target' (1976) and 'Captured' (1977), both produced with a high-fidelity analog sheen characteristic of the era. Despite strong critical reception and a powerful live reputation, the band failed to achieve a major commercial breakthrough. Their sound is defined by Paul Cannon's melodic lead guitar work and Jamison's exceptional vocal range. Following their dissolution, the members remained active in the industry, with Jamison becoming one of the most recognizable voices in 80s rock. Today, Target is a prized discovery for collectors of 70s rock and fans of Jamison's later career.
