Sunday Munich is a collaborative project between vocalist Sarah Matthews and multi-instrumentalist Menton J. Matthews III (also known for his work as Saltillo).
Emerging in the late 1990s, the duo carved out a niche within the trip-hop and downtempo scenes by incorporating prominent classical instrumentation, specifically cello and piano, into a framework of sample-based electronic music. Their debut, Pneuma (1998), is a seminal example of 'dark trip-hop,' drawing comparisons to Portishead's noir-inflected production and the gothic vocal stylings of Cranes. Their follow-up, Vinculum (2000), shifted toward a lighter, more rhythmic collage style, integrating Cocteau Twins-esque ethereal textures. Critically, they are noted for their ability to balance the mechanical nature of loops and drum machines with the organic, often painful emotionality of live strings and confessional lyrics. They remain a cult favorite among crate-diggers and fans of the 'Bristol sound' who seek a more melancholic, chamber-influenced variation of the genre.
