Tantra is arguably the most significant progressive rock entity to emerge from Portugal. Formed in 1975 by Manuel Cardoso and Armando Gama, the band bridged the gap between the local 'Filarmónica' pop-rock scene and the international symphonic rock movement led by Yes and Genesis.
Their debut, 'Mistérios & Maravilhas', established a sound characterized by Cardoso's intricate guitar work and Gama's virtuosic keyboard layers. The band's identity was deeply tied to Cardoso's interest in Indian culture and yoga, which provided a lyrical and conceptual depth unusual for the genre's regional contemporaries. Their second album, 'Holocausto', is widely considered a landmark of European prog, showcasing a more aggressive and polished sound.
