The Black Crowes emerged from Atlanta in 1989 as a defiant anachronism, reviving the blues-based hard rock of The Rolling Stones, Faces, and Humble Pie during the height of hair metal and the dawn of grunge. Led by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, the band's sound is characterized by Rich's use of open-G tunings and Chris's soulful, gritty vocal delivery.
Their debut, 'Shake Your Money Maker' (1990), was a multi-platinum success that reintroduced Southern-fried boogie to the mainstream, while their follow-up, 'The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion' (1992), showcased a more sophisticated, jam-oriented approach. Throughout the 1990s, the band evolved into a premier live act, often associated with the jam band scene due to their improvisational tendencies and collaborations with legends like Jimmy Page.
