The Choir is a cornerstone of the American atmospheric alternative rock scene, emerging from the Southern California 'Christian rock' underground of the 1980s to develop a sound that transcended the genre's typical boundaries. Formed in 1983, the core trio of Derri Daugherty, Steve Hindalong, and Dan Michaels has maintained a prolific output for over four decades.
Their sound identity is built on a foundation of 4AD-inspired dream pop and shoegaze, characterized by Daugherty's 'cloud-like' guitar textures and Hindalong's percussive, rhythm-forward drumming. Critically, they are lauded for Hindalong's lyrics, which moved away from CCM clichés toward a vulnerable, often gritty exploration of faith and failure. The band's influence is significant within the post-rock and ambient communities, notably through former member Marc Byrd, who went on to form the acclaimed duo Hammock. Despite a Grammy nomination and numerous Dove Awards, they have remained a fiercely independent 'musician's band,' sustained by a dedicated cult following and a pioneering Patreon-based model in their later years.
