The Gathering is a seminal Dutch outfit that fundamentally reshaped the landscape of heavy music in the 1990s. Originally emerging from the death-doom scene, their 1995 breakthrough 'Mandylion' introduced vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen and established the 'Gothic Metal' template that would influence a generation of symphonic and atmospheric bands.
However, the band famously rejected genre constraints, pivoting sharply toward shoegaze, trip-hop, and post-rock on subsequent releases like 'How to Measure a Planet?' This evolution saw them move away from metal's aggression toward a sophisticated 'trip-rock' sound characterized by Frank Boeijen's expansive keyboard textures and the Rutten brothers' versatile rhythmic foundations. Critically, they are regarded as pioneers of the '4AD-meets-Metal' aesthetic, successfully blending the ethereal qualities of Dead Can Dance with progressive rock structures. Their career is marked by a restless experimentalism that has maintained a dedicated cult following through multiple vocalists and stylistic shifts.
