The Goon Sax

Brittle, jangling guitars paired with deadpan observations on the awkwardness of being alive. Australian indie pop that feels like a shared secret.

Intro

The Goon Sax sounds like the precise moment between being a teenager and an adult, where everything is slightly too loud and every social interaction feels like a high-stakes puzzle. Their music is built on a foundation of clean, interlocking guitar lines that chime with a nervous energy, supported by a rhythm section that favors steady, unadorned pulses over flashy fills. It is a sound that is both skeletal and deeply melodic, echoing the sun-drenched but slightly melancholic atmosphere of their Brisbane roots.

What truly sets them apart is their commitment to an unvarnished, almost uncomfortable honesty. The vocals are delivered with a deadpan, conversational quality that eschews traditional pop polish in favor of something that sounds like a friend whispering their most embarrassing thoughts in your ear. There is a literary quality to their songwriting, focusing on the minutiae of daily life, the friction of relationships, and the quiet existential dread of the mundane.

Start with their debut, Up to Anything, to hear the raw charm of their early jangle-pop sound. If you prefer something more atmospheric and experimental, their final album Mirror II showcases a band expanding their palette with darker textures and more sophisticated arrangements while keeping their core vulnerability intact.

The Goon Sax was an Australian indie pop trio from Brisbane. Formed in 2013, the band consisted of Riley Jones (vocals, drums, lead guitar), Louis Forster (vocals, rhythm guitar, bass) and James Harrison (bass, rhythm guitar, backing vocals). The band were joined by touring musician Alistair Taylor (lead guitar, keyboards, drums) for live performances. Forster is the son of Robert Forster, co-founder of indie rock band the Go-Betweens. The band released their debut studio album, Up to Anything, in 2016 on the Chapter Music label. This was followed by We're Not Talking in 2018, and Mirror II in 2021. They have performed with Twerps, Blank Realm, U.S. Girls, and Crayon Fields, among other artists. The band's name is a play on words combining the Australian vernacular for boxed wine, a 'goon sack', with the musical instrument the saxophone.
