The Haunted

Formed in 1996 following the dissolution of melodic death metal pioneers At the Gates, The Haunted redirected that band's energy into a more aggressive, thrash-oriented framework. Founded by Patrik Jensen and the Björler brothers, they became a bridge between classic Slayer-style thrash and the burgeoning 'Gothenburg Sound.'

Their 1998 debut is widely credited with revitalizing the thrash genre for a new generation. Throughout the 2000s, the band oscillated between the raw, hardcore-inflected vocals of Peter Dolving and the more traditional death-metal barks of Marco Aro, creating a discography that ranges from pure speed to moody, mid-tempo groove. Critically, they are lauded for their technical precision and for avoiding the 'over-produced' pitfalls of later melodic metal. They occupy a central hub in the Swedish metal family tree, with members also serving in Witchery, Cradle of Filth, and Feared. Their influence is seen in the 'New Wave of American Heavy Metal,' particularly in bands that prioritize rhythmic 'chug' and high-velocity riffing over symphonic elements.
