High-velocity technical metalcore that trades brute force for intricate, neoclassical guitar architecture. Complex, theatrical, and relentlessly precise.
The Human Abstract sounds like a collision between a conservatory-trained orchestra and a modern metalcore outfit. The music is defined by its extreme technicality, featuring dizzying sweep-picked arpeggios and complex counterpoint that feels more like Bach than Black Sabbath. It is dense, fast, and intellectually demanding, yet it retains the visceral emotional core of the mid-2000s metalcore scene.
What truly sets them apart is the sophisticated use of classical theory within a heavy framework. While their peers might rely on simple breakdowns, this band utilizes syncopated harmonies and shifting time signatures to create a sense of constant motion. The vocals range from guttural bellows to soaring, almost theatrical clean passages, adding a layer of dramatic tension to the instrumental gymnastics.
For the best experience, start with their final album, Digital Veil. It represents the absolute peak of their technical prowess and songwriting maturity, blending their neoclassical roots with a darker, more aggressive production style that defines the progressive metalcore genre.
The Human Abstract was an American progressive metalcore band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2004, the group was originally signed to the independent label Hopeless Records, the band then released the two albums Nocturne (2006) and Midheaven (2008) before signing to eOne Music and releasing Digital Veil (2011). The Human Abstract went through several lineup changes over the years, with the final consisting of founding members Dean Herrera, A.J. Minette and Brett Powell, in addition to Henry Selva and Travis Richter. The band's music incorporates dissonance and sweep picking in the guitar work. Loudwire compared their sound to Between the Buried and Me.
