The Refreshments are a cornerstone of the Swedish rock and roll scene, formed in Gävle in 1989. While they began as a cover band called The King-Cats, they evolved into a prolific original outfit that bridged the gap between 1950s rockabilly and the pub rock tradition of the 1970s.
Their sound identity is defined by the songwriting of bassist Joakim Arnell and the virtuosic piano contributions of Johan Blohm, which introduced a strong country and boogie-woogie influence to their rock foundation. A significant turning point in their career was the involvement of Billy Bremner (of Rockpile fame), who produced their early albums and briefly joined as a member, cementing their connection to the British pub rock lineage. They have also collaborated extensively with Dave Edmunds and Albert Lee, further validating their status as world-class traditionalists. Despite the global dominance of more aggressive or electronic genres, The Refreshments have maintained massive commercial success in Scandinavia, including chart-topping holiday albums. They represent a specific 'roots-rock' preservationist movement that prioritizes analog warmth, shuffle rhythms, and melodic accessibility over experimentalism.
