The Silent Years

The Silent Years are a Detroit-based experimental pop/rock project formed in 2003, led by primary songwriter Josh Epstein. Emerging from the vibrant Michigan indie scene of the mid-2000s, the band distinguished itself through a fiercely DIY ethic, producing their own artwork and music videos.

Their sound identity is a complex hybrid, drawing heavily from the melancholic precision of Elliott Smith, the vocal acrobatics of Jeff Buckley, and the psychedelic maximalism of The Flaming Lips. Critically, they are noted for their 'rollercoaster' dynamics, often shifting abruptly from quiet, breathy folk passages to intense noise-rock crescendos. The inclusion of Cassandra Verras on violin and keys added a chamber-pop sophistication that aligned them with contemporaries like Mason Proper and Dark Mean.
