Trail of Tears

Dramatic Norwegian gothic metal defined by the sharp contrast of operatic soprano soaring over aggressive death growls. Intense, symphonic, and deeply melancholic.

Intro

Trail of Tears delivers a quintessential 'beauty and the beast' metal experience, where elegant, soaring female vocals collide with visceral, guttural roars. Their sound is rooted in the late 90s Norwegian gothic scene, characterized by a heavy use of symphonic keyboards and driving, melodic guitar work that occasionally leans into the aggression of black metal. It feels like a high-stakes theatrical performance set in a crumbling cathedral.

What sets them apart is the sheer density of their arrangements and the evolution of their vocal dynamics. While many peers stick to a rigid formula, Trail of Tears has experimented with tenor cleans and more complex harmonic structures, especially during their mid-career transition. The production is often lush and cavernous, giving the music a sense of physical weight and scale that matches their existential lyrical themes.

Start with 'A New Dimension of Might' to hear the band at their creative peak. It perfectly balances their symphonic ambitions with the raw energy of their metal roots. For those who prefer a slightly more modern, polished approach to the genre, 'Existentia' offers a more streamlined but equally powerful entry point into their dark, melodic world.

Trail of Tears is a Norwegian gothic/symphonic black metal band formed in 1997. Through most of their career the band emphasised the use of contrasting soprano and death grunt vocals, except for the release of Free Fall into Fear in 2005, in which the band switched this contrast mostly to tenor and growls, with less frequent soprano passages. The band disbanded in 2013, being succeeded by Thorsen's project Viper Solfa. In 2020, they reformed with old and new members, including previous Sirenia vocalist Ailyn.
