Stripped-back Norwegian black metal with a distinctively heavy, clanking bass and a mid-tempo groove. Raw, icy, and uncompromisingly old-school.
Tulus offers a stark, skeletal take on Norwegian black metal that prioritizes groove and physical texture over the typical wall-of-sound blast beats. Their music feels like a cold, damp cellar: there is an earthy, organic quality to the recording that makes the instruments feel uncomfortably close. The guitars are sharp and brittle, but the real star is often the bass, which clanks and rattles with a mechanical, menacing presence rarely heard in the genre.
What truly sets them apart is their restraint. While their contemporaries were chasing symphonic grandeur or lo-fi chaos, Tulus focused on minimalist, mid-tempo riffs that swing with a dark, primitive energy. The vocals are a dry, raspy croak that feels more like a whispered threat than a theatrical scream. This is black metal reduced to its most essential, bony elements, stripped of all artifice and excess.
Newcomers should start with 'Pure Black Energy' to hear the foundation of their sound, or 'Fandens kall' for a modern production that retains their signature grit. It is the perfect choice for those who find standard black metal too cluttered and want something that hits with the rhythmic weight of rock but the soul of a frozen forest.
Tulus is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo in 1991. Members of Tulus later went and formed the band Khold. After Khold went on hold in 2006, Blodstrup and Sarke resurrected Tulus. Tulus has a "fourth member": Blodstrup's wife, Hildr (Hilde Nymoen), who writes all lyrics for both Tulus and Khold.
