Tussle

Hypnotic, percussion-heavy grooves that bridge the gap between a basement punk show and a late-night techno set. Instrumental, rhythmic, and deeply immersive.

Intro

Tussle sounds like the heartbeat of a city that never quite sleeps but isn't exactly partying either. It is built on a foundation of interlocking percussion and thick, melodic basslines that owe as much to the motorik pulse of Can as they do to the dance-punk explosion of the early 2000s. The music feels tactile and hand-played, avoiding the sterile sheen of laptop production in favor of warm analog synths and echoing drums.

What truly distinguishes them is their restraint. While their contemporaries in the DFA scene often aimed for high-energy peaks, Tussle is content to lock into a groove and let it mutate slowly over time. There is a dub-like sense of space in their mixes, where instruments drop out only to return wrapped in reverb, creating a sense of physical depth that makes the speakers feel like they are breathing.

Start with 'Telescope Mind' for a perfect introduction to their atmospheric rhythmic sensibility. It is the kind of music that works equally well as a focused backdrop for creative work or as the soundtrack to a long, solitary walk through an industrial district at dusk.

Tussle is an American four-piece band from San Francisco, United States, formed in 2001 by Nathan Burazer, Jonathan Holland, Alexis Georgopoulos and Andy Cabic. The band released its first album, Kling Klang, in 2004 on Troubleman Unlimited. Their fourth album, Tempest was released in September 2012.
