UHF is a foundational pillar of the 'Rock Português' boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Formed in Almada in 1978, they were among the first to prove that rock music sung in Portuguese could be both commercially viable and artistically profound.
Led by the enduring figure of António Manuel Ribeiro, the band's sound evolved from a raw, post-punk energy into a more sophisticated alternative rock style that incorporated elements of hard rock and art rock. Their 1980 hit 'Cavalos de Corrida' remains one of the most significant songs in the country's history, serving as a catalyst for the explosion of local talent that followed. Critically, they are lauded for their 'rock poetry,' tackling themes of urban decay, drug addiction, and political transition with a sincerity that avoided the clichés of the era. Despite numerous lineup changes, UHF has remained active for over four decades, maintaining a loyal cult following and a reputation as a fierce live act. They occupy a cultural space similar to The Clash or early U2 within the Lusophone world, bridging the gap between underground rebellion and mainstream resonance.
