Ulthar

Ulthar is a prominent fixture in the contemporary 'cosmic death metal' scene, emerging from the fertile Oakland, California extreme metal community. Formed in 2014, the trio consists of members from notable acts like Vastum and Spirit Possession, bringing a high level of technical pedigree to their sound.

Their identity is defined by a synthesis of dissonant, technical death metal and the atmospheric, tremolo-heavy aesthetics of black metal. Unlike many of their peers who lean into 'cavernous' reverb-drenched production, Ulthar maintains a degree of clarity that highlights their intricate, often bizarre riffing and complex rhythmic interplay. Their 2023 double-release of Anthronomicon and Helionomicon marked a significant evolution, with the latter featuring a single forty-minute track that showcased their progressive ambitions. Critically, they are lauded for their ability to evoke Lovecraftian horror through musical theory rather than just lyrical tropes, using non-standard scales and jarring transitions to create a sense of 'otherness.' They occupy a similar space to bands like Tomb Mold and Blood Incantation but are distinguished by a more aggressive, black-metal-influenced velocity.
