Брати Гадюкіни

Gritty, satirical rock that blends blues, reggae, and punk with sharp Galician wit. The sound of a late-night Lviv dive bar in the early nineties.

Intro

Braty Hadyukiny sound like a chaotic, smoke-filled basement where a blues band, a reggae group, and a punk outfit all decided to share the same stage at once. It is music that feels lived-in, slightly dangerous, and deeply authentic, characterized by a loose-limbed groove and a brass section that punctuates the air like a series of exclamation points. The production often carries that warm, slightly unpolished analog grit of the late Soviet and early independence eras.

What truly sets them apart is their lyrical bite. They pioneered the use of 'surzhyk' and local Galician argot to tell stories of the 'rahul' - the provincial everyman navigating a world of lack of culture and social absurdity. Their irony is a shield and a weapon, turning gritty tales of addiction and street life into anthems of resilience and dark humor. They don't just play rock; they perform a satirical autopsy of the society around them.

Start with 'Vsyo Chotko!' to hear the band at their most revolutionary. It is the perfect entry point for understanding how they transformed Western musical tropes into something uniquely Ukrainian. For a more polished but equally sharp experience, 'My - khloptsi z Bandershtadtu' captures their peak cultural influence and their ability to turn local pride into a national rock phenomenon.

Braty Hadiukiny (Ukrainian: Брати Гадюкіни), or simply Hady (Ukrainian: Гади) is a Ukrainian rock band from Lviv, one of the most successful Ukrainian bands of Soviet times. The band's musical style combines different genres such as rock'n'roll, blues, punk, reggae, funk and folk. Ironic song lyrics contain a lot of local vernacularisms, slang and surzhyk. The name translates as "Hadyukin Brothers", where the fictional last name Hadyukin is derived from the word hadyuka, or "viper". The abbreviation literally means "snakes" (In Ukrainian the two words are cognates.)
