Waylander

Waylander is a foundational pillar of the Celtic metal subgenre, formed in Northern Ireland in 1993. They were among the first to successfully integrate traditional Irish folk music with extreme metal, specifically drawing from the burgeoning black metal and death metal scenes of the early 90s.

Their sound identity is built on the prominent use of the tin whistle as a lead instrument, often mirroring the guitar melodies to create a 'folk-shred' aesthetic. Throughout their career, they have navigated numerous lineup changes while maintaining a consistent focus on Irish mythology, paganism, and historical resistance. Critically, they are respected for their authenticity and for avoiding the 'party' tropes often associated with modern folk metal, instead opting for a more somber and defiant tone. Their influence is most visible in the works of fellow Irish acts like Cruachan and Primordial, helping to establish Ireland as a unique hub for blackened folk music.
