White Town

White Town is the project of Jyoti Mishra, a British-Indian musician who became an accidental icon of the late 90s DIY electronic movement. Emerging from the Derby indie scene, Mishra's sound is defined by a rigorous adherence to home-recording ethics and a diverse influence web ranging from the Pixies to Kraftwerk.

His 1997 global hit 'Your Woman' is a landmark in sample-based pop, famously utilizing a muted trumpet hook from Al Bowlly's 1932 recording 'My Woman'. This track's success briefly thrust a staunchly independent, straight-edge Marxist into the major label machine, a tension that defines his mid-career arc. Critically, White Town is respected for bridging the gap between the guitar-driven indie of the 80s and the laptop-pop of the 2000s. Despite the 'one-hit wonder' label, Mishra has maintained a prolific, fiercely independent output on his own Bzangy Records, continuing to explore the intersection of personal heartbreak and political theory through a minimalist electronic lens.
