XIII. století is the preeminent gothic rock outfit of the Czech Republic, formed in 1990 by brothers Petr and Pavel Štěpán following the dissolution of their influential punk band Hrdinové Nové Fronty (HNF).
This transition from punk to gothic rock was seamless, retaining the aggressive rhythmic foundation of their earlier work while introducing the melodic gloom and theatricality of the UK gothic scene. Petr Štěpán, the band's visionary, is not only a musician but a scholar of vampire lore, having authored 'The Book of Nosferatu', which deeply informs the band's lyrical focus on occultism, history, and mythology. Their sound evolved from the raw, guitar-driven 'Amulet' to the more keyboard-heavy and atmospheric 'Gotika', eventually solidifying into a high-energy, darkwave-adjacent rock style. They enjoy a massive cult following in Poland, often headlining major festivals like Castle Party. Critically, they are respected for their longevity and for maintaining a consistent aesthetic identity that bridges the gap between classic 80s goth and modern dark rock.
