Young American Primitive is the primary alias of San Francisco-based producer Greg Scanavino, a pivotal figure in the 1990s American electronic underground. Emerging from the Bay Area house and rave scene, Scanavino's work under the YAP moniker helped define the 'ambient techno' and 'downtempo' movements in the United States.

His 1993 self-titled debut on Zoë Magik Records is considered a cult classic of the era, blending the rhythmic sensibilities of house with the expansive, psychedelic textures of ambient music. His track 'These Waves' gained international recognition after being featured on Sasha and John Digweed's seminal 'Northern Exposure' mix, cementing his status among global electronic elites. Despite a career marked by label complications, including a high-profile unreleased project with Geffen (African Cosmopolitan), Scanavino's influence persists through his meticulous production style which emphasizes analog warmth and dub-inflected spatial processing. His sound is characterized by a balance of 'Euro-techno' precision and a distinctly American, almost pastoral, melodic sense. Critically, he is viewed as a bridge between the early rave era and the more cerebral IDM and progressive house movements that followed.
