Thick, bass-driven sludge that trades atmospheric drift for propulsive energy. Gritty post-metal with a desert-rock heart and a restless, melodic edge.
Zozobra was the primary creative vehicle for Caleb Scofield, best known as the bassist and vocalist for Cave In and Old Man Gloom. Formed in 2006 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the project represented Scofield's first foray into primary songwriting.
The sound is a specific intersection of the Boston hardcore scene's technicality and the sprawling, atmospheric weight of post-metal. Unlike the more abstract and conceptual work of Old Man Gloom, Zozobra focused on tighter song structures and a prominent, overdriven bass-lead aesthetic. The project's history is deeply intertwined with the Hydra Head Records family, featuring collaborations with members of Isis and Cave In. Critically, Zozobra is viewed as a bridge between the 'artcore' movements of the mid-2000s and more traditional sludge rock. Following Scofield's tragic passing in 2018, the band's catalog has been solidified as a vital pillar of the post-metal canon, celebrated for its unique 'desert sludge' atmosphere and visceral emotional honesty.
