8th Wonder

Released in 1981, 8th Wonder is the second studio album from The Sugarhill Gang, arriving at a pivotal moment when hip-hop was transitioning from a live park phenomenon to a recorded medium. Following the massive success of 'Rapper's Delight,' this album solidified the 'Sugar Hill sound' - a hybrid of live disco-funk instrumentation provided by the legendary Sugar Hill house band (including bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip McDonald) and the rhythmic vocal delivery of Wonder Mike, Master Gee, and Big Bank Hank. Unlike later hip-hop which relied on digital sampling, 8th Wonder is a testament to the era of 'replayed' hits, where musicians would meticulously recreate popular grooves to provide a bed for the MCs. The album is notable for its long-form tracks, particularly the eight-minute 'Funk Box,' which showcases the band's endurance and the group's call-and-response mastery. It remains a definitive example of early 80s 'Old School' rap.
