A Predator's Portrait

Released in 2001, A Predator's Portrait is widely considered the bridge between Soilwork's early thrash-influenced death metal and the more melodic, 'modern' metal sound they would later perfect. Recorded at Studio Fredman simultaneously with Opeth's Blackwater Park, the album shares a certain sonic depth and clarity characteristic of that era's Swedish production. It marks the first time vocalist Björn 'Speed' Strid incorporated clean singing, a move that would become a staple of the melodic death metal genre. The album is also notable for being the final contribution from keyboardist Carlos Del Olmo Holmberg, whose atmospheric and sometimes industrial-leaning synth work gave the record a distinct, futuristic edge compared to their peers. It was the band's debut on Nuclear Blast, catapulting them into the international spotlight and cementing their status as innovators within the Gothenburg scene.
