Released in 1993, Heartwork represents a pivotal moment in the history of heavy metal, often cited as the primary catalyst for the melodic death metal subgenre. Moving away from the 'goregrind' style they helped pioneer on earlier efforts like Reek of Putrefaction, Carcass embraced a more structured, song-oriented approach. The album features the legendary lineup of Jeff Walker, Bill Steer, and Michael Amott, whose dual-guitar interplay redefined the possibilities of extreme metal. Recorded at Parr Street Studios with producer Colin Richardson, the production is notably cleaner and more 'hi-fi' than its predecessors, emphasizing the technical proficiency of the performers.
