Released in 2016 to celebrate his 75th birthday, Apache marks a significant stylistic shift for Aaron Neville. Moving away from the doo-wop covers and adult contemporary polish of his previous decade, Neville collaborated with Eric Krasno (of Soulive/Lettuce) and members of the Daptone Records family to create a gritty, funk-forward soul record. Recorded at Studio G in Brooklyn, the album features lyrics largely co-written by Neville himself, drawing on his personal poetry and journals to touch on themes of his New Orleans upbringing, social justice, and enduring love. Critically, it was hailed as a 'return to form' that successfully integrated his angelic vocal style with a tougher, more rhythmic backing band. The album's title refers to Neville's childhood nickname, signaling the deeply personal nature of the project.
