Atoma

Released in 2016, Atoma represents a refined peak in Dark Tranquillity's second act. Following the departure of founding guitarist Martin Henriksson, the band leaned further into the electronic and atmospheric elements that had been gestating since 'Projector'. Recorded in their hometown of Gothenburg and mixed at the legendary Fascination Street Studios, the production is exceptionally clear, highlighting the interplay between Martin Brändström’s prominent electronics and the twin-guitar attack. The album is notable for its increased use of clean vocals and its focus on existential themes, moving away from the more abstract sci-fi leanings of earlier works toward a grounded, philosophical introspection. It was widely praised by critics for maintaining the band's relevance decades into their career, often cited as one of their most cohesive and emotionally resonant efforts since 'Character' or 'Fiction'.
