Aurora Consurgens

Released in 2006, Aurora Consurgens is Angra's sixth studio album and marks a significant stylistic shift from the symphonic power metal of Temple of Shadows. Named after a medieval alchemical text, the album explores psychological themes influenced by Jungian theory, specifically focusing on mental disorders. Sonically, it is characterized by a heavier, more guitar-driven approach with down-tuned riffs and a prominent role for bassist Felipe Andreoli. It is the final album to feature virtuoso drummer Aquiles Priester, whose performance here is a masterclass in technical metal drumming infused with Brazilian regional rhythms. Recorded between Germany and Brazil, the production by Dennis Ward provides a punchy, modern sound that emphasizes the band's shift toward progressive metal. While it moved away from the orchestral elements of their past, it solidified their reputation as one of the most technically proficient and conceptually ambitious bands in the global metal scene.
