Burnt Offerings

Released in 1995, Burnt Offerings serves as a critical pivot point in Iced Earth's discography. Following a period of frustration and lineup instability, founder Jon Schaffer recruited vocalist Matt Barlow, whose emotive baritone would define the band's 'golden era.' Sonically, the album is a bridge between the technical thrash of 'Night of the Stormrider' and the melodic power metal of 'The Dark Saga.' It is widely considered the band's darkest work, both lyrically and tonally, influenced by Schaffer's personal disillusionment with the music industry at the time. The production is dense and somewhat murky, emphasizing the low-end and the percussive nature of the 'Schaffer gallop.' The album is most famous for its 16-minute closing track, 'Dante's Inferno,' a progressive metal tour-de-force that follows the structure of the Divine Comedy. While it initially polarized European fans who preferred the band's earlier speed metal leanings, it solidified their American fanbase and remains a cult classic of 90s heavy metal.
