Released in November 1983, Back to Basics is a significant 'reclamation' project for The Temptations. After a commercially disappointing stint at Atlantic Records and a shaky return to Motown, the group reunited with Norman Whitfield, the architect of their 'psychedelic soul' era. The sessions were famously turbulent due to frontman Dennis Edwards' personal struggles, leading to the unofficial introduction of Ali-Ollie Woodson on 'Stop the World Right Here (I Wanna Get Off)'. Woodson would soon become the group's permanent lead. Sonically, the album blends Whitfield's cinematic production style with 1980s R&B sensibilities, utilizing synthesizers and tighter, more compressed percussion. While it didn't return them to the top of the pop charts, it solidified their standing on the R&B charts and introduced Ron Tyson, who would become a cornerstone of the group for decades. It stands as a testament to the group's durability and the enduring power of the Motown vocal tradition.
