Bergtatt – et eeventyr i 5 capitler is the 1995 debut from Ulver and the first entry in their 'Trilogie.' Recorded in Oslo when the band members were still teenagers, it represents a pivotal moment in the Norwegian black metal scene where the genre's boundaries were first pushed toward neofolk and progressive structures. Unlike their contemporaries who focused on anti-Christian themes, Ulver drew from Dano-Norwegian poetry and folk tales of girls being lured into the mountains by trolls. Sonically, the album is defined by its 'Endless Lydstudio' production - a cavernous, wet mix that favors atmosphere over surgical precision. It features a unique 'low choir' vocal style and prominent flute, elements that would later define the 'folk metal' subgenre.
