Cardiac Arrest

Released in 1977, Cardiac Arrest serves as the debut studio album for the New York City-based outfit then known as the Players Association, soon to be renamed Cameo. Led by Larry Blackmon, the album is a quintessential example of late-70s ensemble funk, featuring a large roster of musicians that creates a dense, wall-of-sound production style. While Blackmon's signature nasal vocal style is present in its infancy, the album is primarily defined by its sophisticated horn arrangements and the 'rubbery' bass playing that would become a genre staple. Critically, the album is viewed as a bridge between the P-Funk influence of George Clinton and the more commercial disco-funk that dominated the late 70s charts. It peaked at #16 on the Billboard R&B charts, anchored by the success of 'Rigor Mortis' (notably absent from some tracklists but central to the era). This record captures Cameo before they stripped down to a trio, offering a maximalist funk experience that is essential for understanding the evolution of urban dance music.
