Carwreck EP

Released in August 1996, the Carwreck EP serves as a pivotal bridge between Funki Porcini’s (James Braddell) cinematic downtempo roots and the burgeoning 'drill and bass' movement of the late 90s. While Braddell is primarily known for the smoky, surrealist atmospheres of albums like 'Hed Kandi', this EP highlights his willingness to let his sound be deconstructed by his peers. The inclusion of remixes by Wagon Christ (Luke Vibert) and Squarepusher (Tom Jenkinson) transforms the title track from a jazzy stroll into a masterclass in rhythmic manipulation. Wagon Christ leans into the tape-saturated, playful side of the track, while Squarepusher introduces the hyper-kinetic, glitchy percussion that would soon define the Rephlex and Warp sound. The original track 'The Fly' remains one of Braddell's most evocative pieces, utilizing buzzing textures and a slow-burn arrangement to create a sense of creeping urban dread.
