Chrono

Released in 2001 on the influential BPitch Control label, Chrono represents Paul Kalkbrenner's foundational period within the Berlin minimal techno movement. Coming just after his debut album 'Superimpose', this EP showcases a shift toward a more refined, tech-house influenced sound. The four tracks - Guardia, D.E.E.P., Glacier, and Precision - are characterized by their 4/4 rigidity and a monochromatic sonic palette. Unlike the cinematic 'Berlin Calling' era that would follow years later, Chrono is more aligned with the clinical aesthetics of early 2000s IDM and minimal. It was recorded during a time when Berlin's club culture was moving away from the maximalism of the 90s toward a more intellectual, stripped-back approach. Critically, it is viewed as a bridge between his experimental early works and the melodic clarity that would eventually make him a household name in electronic music.
