Dance of Death

Released in 2003, Dance of Death is the second studio album following the return of Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith, solidifying the band's modern six-piece lineup. It is notable for being the first album where every member of the band received a songwriting credit, including drummer Nicko McBrain on 'New Frontier.' Sonically, the album pushes further into progressive territory than its predecessor, Brave New World, featuring longer track lengths and more complex arrangements. The centerpiece, 'Paschendale,' is widely regarded as one of the band's finest historical epics, utilizing a cinematic structure to detail the horrors of WWI. The album also breaks tradition with 'Journeyman,' the first and only track in the band's discography to be recorded entirely with acoustic instruments and orchestral backing. Despite the controversial CGI cover art, the musical content was hailed as a sophisticated evolution of the NWOBHM sound, blending their signature gallop with symphonic and folk influences.
