Evocation I – The Arcane Dominion

Released in 2009, Evocation I – The Arcane Dominion represents a significant conceptual and sonic pivot for Eluveitie. Following the success of Slania, the band chose to fulfill a long-held ambition to record a fully acoustic project. This album is the first of a two-part 'Evocation' series (concluded years later with Pantheon). It is notable for its academic rigor; Chrigel Glanzmann utilized actual Gaulish inscriptions from archaeological finds like the Larzac and Chamalières tablets for the lyrics. Musically, it elevated Anna Murphy from a supporting instrumentalist to a primary vocal presence, a shift that would define the band's sound until her departure. Critics, including those at AllMusic, noted the album's successful transition into neofolk territory, praising its authenticity and the band's ability to maintain their signature intensity without the use of electricity. It remains a landmark in the folk metal genre for proving that the 'folk' elements could stand entirely on their own merit.
